MEET THE TEAM
Head of Secretariat Helen Anthony
This series introduces members of the CMC Team – get to know the Directors and staff to learn about their experience in mediation and plans for the organisation.
This month Helen Anthony, the Head of Secretariat, introduces herself and shares how she keeps wheels running at the CMC and talks about where she sees the organisation heading in the future.
Who are you and what is your experience in mediation?
I’m the Head of Secretariat for the CMC. I started off working life qualifying as a solicitor before moving in to policy development specifically related to access to justice. I also work with the Family Mediation Council and it was whilst in that role that I started working alongside the CMC. In 2017 when the CMC needed some additional support I was able to provide it, and the following year the CMC contracted with my small company to provide secretariat services to CMC in the long term.
What is your area of work?
I support the work of the CMC’s Officers, Boards and Committees, ensuring meetings are prepared for and minuted, that governance processes are in place and facilitating various projects. Together with the CEO, I implement decisions taken by the board/committees. I also work alongside Angela Turley in managing applications for membership and regulated status for individuals and organisations. In addition, my team and I support working groups to organise the CMC’s events such as annual Conference and the National Mediation Awards.
Where do you see the CMC heading? What are your hopes for the mediation sector?
The CMC has built steadily over the past few years to strengthen voluntary regulation for civil, commercial and workplace mediators. I believe its new system offers a great pathway for individuals looking to become established as a mediator, and offers the public assurance about the professional standards that mediators meet; I see this as becoming increasingly important especially as the government appears to have a renewed focus on dispute resolution outside the court system.
