CMC Responses to Consultations and Calls for Evidence
CMC Responses to Consultations and Calls for Evidence
Behind the scenes, the CMC has been actively contributing to policy discussions that affect mediation practice and the work of our members. This autumn, we submitted three responses addressing access to justice, dispute resolution, and the place of mediation within the legal system.

As mediation continues to play an expanding role within the justice system, the CMC has been actively engaged in policy discussions that shape the environment in which mediators work. Throughout 2025, this has included responding to consultations and inquiries that directly affect access to justice, dispute resolution processes, and the legal frameworks that support mediation.
This autumn, the CMC submitted three formal responses that reflect its experience in setting standards for mediation and its role in representing the mediation community in England and Wales. Together, these responses highlight the value of mediation as a proportionate, effective, and trusted method of dispute resolution, while also addressing practical considerations around implementation, oversight, and support. The full responses are available below.
Access to Justice Inquiry
Justice Select Committee
The CMC’s response to the Justice Select Committee’s Access to Justice Inquiry considers how mediation can support early resolution of disputes, improve access for individuals and communities, and reduce pressure on the courts. It highlights the contribution of community mediation services and the importance of sustainable funding and awareness.
Opt-out Collective Actions Regime Review
Call for Evidence
In its response to the Opt-out Collective Actions Regime Review, the CMC explores the role mediation can play in complex and multi-party disputes, including representative and collective actions. The submission addresses the flexibility of mediation and the importance of appropriate procedural frameworks to support its use.
Singapore Convention on Mediation
Ministry of Justice Consultation
The CMC strongly supports implementation of the Singapore Convention on Mediation in the UK. Its response sets out why adoption of the Convention would support international commercial mediation and reinforce the UK’s position as a leading centre for dispute resolution.
