Academic Forum – The Importance of Mediation Research

The recent meeting of the CMC Academic Forum highlighted the growing importance of mediation research in higher education. With insights from leading academics and practitioners, the event showcased how universities are shaping the future of dispute resolution through innovative teaching and research.

  REPORT BY VICTORIA HARRIS

The interest sparked by the recent CMC Academic Forum was due to recognition by many that there has never been a better time to research topics related to mediation.

Speaker Dr Anna Howard from UCL, shared her experience of being a PhD student and how it had led to her current experience of teaching mediation at post graduate level at UCL, whilst also being a practising mediator. Professor Pablo Cortes from the University of Leicester shared detail of the taught LLM in ADR offered at Leicester and Zora Kizilyurek shared practical tips about how to begin and then thrive during a PhD journey based upon her experience at the University of Newcastle.

More Universities are offering mediation learning at both under graduate and post graduate level, on a taught and research basis as well as practical experience in mediation clinics and at competitions.

With mediation being further integrated into Civil Justice it is vital that Higher Education is able to equip students.  The role of Higher Education to support the development of ADR was noted by The Lady Chief Justice who delivered a significant speech to the British Institute of International and Comparative Law this week, highlighting the evolving role of mediation in dispute resolution in light of the Singapore Convention.

The Civil Mediation Council are committed to supporting all Higher Education institutions to deliver more mediation learning and research. As part of its strategic review the CMC will be launching new initiatives to support mediation within Higher Education and we can’t wait to share them with you!
